(A list of additional old-school word-processing programs for Mac and Windows can be found in this post by blogger Jeff Winkler. Speaking of PCs, Windows users won't feel left out in the dark thanks to Dark Room, which saves files as plain text only but makes up for the limitation by costing users nothing to download it.

No, there's none of the good smells or tactile feel from key or paper, but the illusion of staring at a single blank page that WriteRoom ($24.95) for the Mac displays provides just the right distraction-free focus without compromising all those little things we've all gotten used to the last couple of decades (like cut, copy, paste, spell-check and the ability to save in more than one place so we don't lose our work).ĭocuments can be saved in plain text or Word-compatible versions, and the full-screen mode can be customized to look like black on white paper or the more "modern" look and feel of green or yellow phosphor on black, just like that luggable Compaq PC I owned more than 20 years ago. Since no such enabling technology exists, I've found a helpful alternative. If only there were a way to magically convey the words from page to screen to e-mail to editor. The extra effort to pound keys that all sound different, the smacking sound of the type bars as they strike the platen, to say nothing of the wonderful aroma of ink and old gears working behind the metal-clad scene.

There's nothing like the feel of a rugged, reliable old manual typewriter under the fingertips. I feel the same about writing and typewriters. In Monday's post about the iPhone as e-book reader, a reader pointed out the beauty and joy of real books, which made me realize I forgot to mention my own love for books printed on paper. This can also be fixed by flipping to landscape then flipping back.Left, WWI-era Remington "Deluxe Noiseless" manual typewriter right, dumbed-down MacBook running WriteRoom center, Nick, writing partner) Same problem as the WordPress app where I keep losing view of the typing space. (ya I’ve started writing my blog posts in WriteRoom and pasting them into WordPress because not being able to save in WordPress is so frustrating)ģ. You can probably see a lot of places in this post where it says ‘im’ ‘havent’ or ‘ive’. Really inconsistent about auto-formatting words. WHY CAN’T I SHAKE TO UNDO? This is so annoying. Since my iPhone challenge dictates that I can’t use my computer, I haven’t yet seen how well it interfaces with it.ġ. How is that obvious? Futura is a terrible copy font.) You can customize the background colours too which is cool, but I’ve been sticking to white. Right now I’m obviously using Futura…obviously. I like that you can customize by choosing from 37 different fonts and 15 colours on this app. Just like in my WordPress app review I want to be clear that I love this app and it’s mind-blowing that i can do what I’m doing from my phone.

I expected I’d have switched to landscape by now, but I’m making less and less typos in portrait as I go so it hasn’t been necessary. I’ve almost exclusively been using portrait because it takes less movement and it’s a lot easier on the thumbs. I seem to have developed an odd typing technique where I’ll always use my right thumb, but alternate between my left thumb, index, and middle finger….odder because I’m right handed. I haven’t had any problems or frustration by being restricted to my using my iPhone so far. Whenever I get an idea I can get it down and do some writing (ideas seem to be hard to come by lately, so if I get one it’s great that I can write it down before I forget). Wherever I go I can work on my NaNo, whether I’m walking down the street, on the subway, at the office, having dinner, or out at the bar. If that doesnt suit you, our users have ranked more than 50 alternatives to WriteRoom and loads of them are available for Windows so hopefully you can. WriteRoom alternatives are mainly Text Editors but may also be Word Processors or Note-taking Tools.

I’ve been trying to focus on writing lately so I’ve been neglecting the blog, so i thought I’d just give everyone a quick update on how the iPhone challenge is going and talk about the WriteRoom iOS app I’ve been using.įirst of all, the iPhone challenge.
